Step 3: The Medical Examiner Process
Introduced nationally — 9 September 2024
Before a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death can be issued, the new Medical Examiner system must review all deaths in England & Wales. This ensures clarity and consistency for families.

A death in England & Wales should be registered within 5 days at the Register Office in the area where the death occurred.
