Music Arrangements

Creating a Personal and Meaningful Tribute

Music often reaches beyond words. It can bring comfort, stir memories and gently express feelings that are difficult to put into words. Whether traditional or modern, religious or non-religious, music can play an important role in honouring a life.

At Robert A. Drew & Son, we will guide you through each step and help you choose music that feels personal, respectful and meaningful to you and your family.

Where Music Can Be Included

Music may be included at several points during a funeral service, such as:

  • As guests arrive
  • During a moment of quiet reflection
  • Alongside a reading or eulogy
  • With a photo or visual tribute
  • As the coffin enters or leaves the chapel
  • At the close of the service as people depart

Some families prefer a single piece of music; others choose several moments. There is no right or wrong — only what feels right for you.

Accepted Music Formats

Different venues allow different formats. We will advise you based on your chosen location.

Most crematoria and chapels can accept:

  • Digital audio files (MP3)
  • CDs (clearly labelled with track details)
  • Approved digital playlists
  • USB memory sticks
  • Live musicians (arranged in advance)

If you would like live music — such as organ, piano, guitar, strings, choir, bagpipes or a soloist — we can help arrange and coordinate this for you.

Choosing the Right Music

Families often find it helpful to think about:

  • A favourite song, artist or style
  • A hymn, psalm or spiritual piece
  • Music linked to a hobby or passion
  • Instrumental or classical selections
  • Songs played often at home or on journeys
  • Music that reflects their personality — gentle, joyful or uplifting

Many families choose something calm for arrival, a personal piece during reflection, and a warm or hopeful piece as the service concludes.

Religious & Non-Religious Choices

We are happy to offer guidance on:

  • Traditional hymns
  • Contemporary worship music
  • Non-religious or reflective pieces
  • Instrumental versions of familiar songs
  • Cultural or regional music traditions

Your funeral arranger will ensure all choices are suitable and respectful for your chosen venue.

How to Provide the Music

To allow time for preparation and testing, we ask that music is provided at least 72 hours before the service.

Music can be supplied via:

  • Email (digital files)
  • USB memory stick or CD
  • A printed list for an organist or musician
  • Streaming links (where permitted by the venue)

We will coordinate all technical arrangements on your behalf, so you can feel reassured on the day.

Example Service Structure

Some families find it helpful to follow a simple outline:

Moment in the Service Type of Music
ArrivalGentle or reflective
ReflectionPersonal or favourite piece
CommittalQuiet background music
DeparturePeaceful or uplifting

We are always happy to help you build a playlist that reflects your loved one’s life, memories and personality.
