What to Expect on the Day
Guidance, Care and Respect — When It Matters Most
The day of the funeral can feel emotional and unfamiliar, but you will not be facing it alone. At Robert A. Drew & Son, we take care of every detail with dignity, professionalism and compassion — allowing you to focus on remembering your loved one.
Below is a gentle guide to help you understand what usually happens on the day, so you know what to expect and feel supported throughout.
Step 1 — Meeting Point or Family Home
On the day, our team will arrive at the agreed location. This may be your home, the home of your loved one, or another chosen meeting point.
If a cortege has been arranged, the funeral director may lead on foot as a mark of respect. From the very first moment, we will guide you calmly, explain what is happening, and ensure everyone feels supported.
Step 2 — The Funeral Procession
The hearse will lead the way, followed by family and guests travelling in our limousines or in private vehicles.
If you wish, the route can pass places of personal significance — such as a former home, place of work, or somewhere special to your loved one. We will manage timings carefully and keep you informed throughout.
Step 3 — Arrival at the Venue
Upon arrival, our team will be waiting to welcome you and guide everyone to their seats.
Pallbearers — whether family members, friends, or our experienced staff — will carry the coffin with dignity into the church, chapel, crematorium or chosen venue. Floral tributes, photographs and keepsakes will be placed thoughtfully to reflect your loved one’s life.
Step 4 — The Funeral Service
The service itself is a time for reflection, remembrance and shared moments.
Depending on your wishes, the service may include:
• Readings or poems
• Tributes or eulogies
• Music or hymns
• Prayers or moments of quiet reflection
Whether the service is traditional or contemporary, religious or non-religious, every detail is arranged with care so you can focus fully on the occasion.
Step 5 — The Committal
For Cremation Services
The committal usually takes place within the crematorium chapel. This may include final words, prayers or a quiet moment of farewell. Curtains may close or remain open, depending on your wishes.
For Burial Services
The committal takes place at the graveside. Final words may be spoken before the coffin is lowered. Some families choose to place flowers, soil or small personal items as a final tribute. We will guide this moment gently and respectfully.
Step 6 — Leaving the Venue
At the conclusion of the service, guests will be invited to leave calmly and at their own pace. Some may wish to pause to view floral tributes or speak with the family.
We ensure there is time and space for everyone before departing.
Step 7 — Wake or Gathering
Many families choose to meet afterwards to share memories and celebrate the life of their loved one. This may be at home, a local venue or community space.
If helpful, we can offer guidance or recommendations when planning a gathering.
Step 8 — After the Funeral
Our care does not end when the service is over. We remain available to help with:
- Collection of ashes following cremation
- Guidance on memorials, urns and keepsakes
- Returning medical equipment
- Assistance with paperwork or probate queries
- Signposting bereavement and support services
We are here for you — both now and in the days ahead.
